Turkish OPCW chief moved by Nobel Peace Prize



Experts from the Hague-based global chemical weapons watchdog are working to destroy Syria’s chemical weapons stock after the chemical attack in Syria in August which killed over 1000 and injured a lot of other people. On August 26, members of the OPCW team came under sniper fire, they were trying to find the caches of chemicals used by the Syrian regime.
On Friday, The Norwegian Nobel committee announced that the OPCW had won the Nobel Peace Prize. The organization which works for the destruction of Syria’s chemical weapon arsenal is really moved by this honor. President Abdullah Gül is very pleased that a Turk is at the head of an international organization that took the Nobel Peace Prize and he congratulated all the staff of the organization. This award is an indication of the importance of organization’s work in war-torn Syria.
Head of the OPCW Ahmet Üzümcü said "We were aware that our work was silently but surely contributing to peace in the world. The entire international community has been made aware of our work.”
“It is difficult not to be overwhelmed by this honor. For over 16 years, the OPCW has done what was expected of us. We were always inspired by the true humanitarian spirit that imbues the Chemical Weapons Convention. A great honor has been bestowed on me and my colleagues, but without the support of other states this would not have been possible,”
“Fighting against chemical weapons is important, as much as fighting against nuclear weapons. All of these weapons are defined as weapons of mass destruction. That's why I am very pleased with the success of the organization. I found the fact that the organization took this prize at a time when it is led by a Turkish diplomat very meaningful.”

Le directeur turc de l'OPCW fier de recevoir le prix Nobel de la paix
Les experts de l’Organisation pour l’interdiction des armes chimiques basée à La Haye sont en train de travailler à détruire ces armes  après l’attaque chimique en Syrie en août qui a tué plus de 1000 personnes et a fait de nombreux blessés. Le 26 août dernier, les membres de l’OPCW sont venus sous le feu des tireurs embusqués essayer de trouver les caches de produits chimiques utilisés par le régime syrien.
Vendredi, le Comité Nobel norvégien a annoncé que l’OCPW avait obtenu le Prix Nobel de la Paix. L’Organisation qui œuvre à la destruction des armes chimiques syriennes s’est déclarée très émue de cet honneur. Le président Abdullah Gül s’est dit très heureux qu’un Turc soit à la tête d’une organisation internationale récompensée par le prix Nobel de la paix, il a félicité toute le personnel de l’Organisation. Cette récompense est une indication de l’importance du travail de l’Organisation dans la guerre en Syrie.
Ahmet Üzümcü, président de l’OCPW a déclaré: « Nous étions conscients que notre travail était discret mais a bien contribué à la paix dans le monde. L’ensemble de la  communauté internationale a été informée de notre travail. »
« C’est difficile de ne pas être transporté de bonheur par cet honneur. Cela fait plus de 16 ans que nous essayons d’arriver à ce que nous venons de faire. Nous étions toujours inspirés par un véritable esprit humanitaire qui imprègne la convention sur les armes chimiques. Un grand honneur nous a été attribué à moi et à mes collègues mais sans le soutien des autres pays, cela n’aurait jamais été possible. »
« Se battre contre les armes chimiques est aussi important que de se battre contre les armes nucléaires. Toutes ces armes sont des armes de destruction  massive. C’est pourquoi  je suis très heureux du succès de l’Organisation. Je trouve que le fait que l’Organisation reçoive le prix en ce moment, quand elle est menée par un diplomate turc, est très significatif ».
