Tourism takes off
Thursday 11 November
Turkey attracted more than 25 million foreign tourists in 2008 and 27 million in 2009.
Foreign tourists arrivals increased substantially in Turkey between 2002 and 2005, from 12.8 million to 21.2 million, which made Turkey a top-10 destination in the world for foreign visitors.
Tourism revenues are now the second largest source of national revenue, trailing only behind foreign export.
The Turkish government is investing heavily in tourism development, and its growth encourages foreign tourists to stay. More Turks work in tourism than in any other industry except construction.
Foreign tourists mainly come from the UK, Russia, Germany, Israel, Japan, Iran, the USA, France, Scandinavia and Arab countries (Northern Africa and Saudi Arabia).
In Turkey, there is a wide variety of destinations such as historical and cultural places like the Istanbul mosques, archeological areas and many seaside resorts along the Mediterranean and Aegean seas with a warm climate.
More and more people go to Turkey thanks to the development of tourism encouraged by government policy.
