The trial of coup plotters
196 Turkish soldiers, among them senior commanders, went on trial on Thursday, December the 16th in a landmark case over an alleged 2003 plot to oust the Islamist-rooted government.
The case marks the toughest challenge yet to the once-omnipotent Turkish army.
Had it been successful, the conspiracy, dubbed « Sledgehammer », would have been the fifth time the Turkish military had intervened against a government since 1960.
The officers allegedly planned to take over the country and unseat Turkey's ruling Islamist-rooted Justice and Development Party (AKP) after creating chaos by bombing at least two major mosques, provoking a conflict with neighboring Greece and assassinating religious leaders.
The armed forces say that the plot was no more than a seminar to discuss hypothetical scenarios.
Thousands of documents confiscated from military bases will be used by prosecutors in this trial to try to prove their charge that the plan was a real plot to bring down the government.
The trial started in a huge courtroom inside a prison complex, in Silivri town, near Istanbul. This putsch attempt has split the nation and weakened its once all-powerful military.
The trial is increasing tensions between supporters of the AKP and the opposition, which fears an increasing government autocracy. The tensions were exacerbated by a last-minute change in judges and allegations of forged evidence from the family of the officer accused of masterminding the plot, retired Gen. Cetin Dogan.

Le procès de 196 militaires, dont un nombre d’officiers de haut rang, a débuté le 16 décembre. L'affaire, datant de 2003, concernerait un complot destiné à renverser le gouvernement islamiste actuel.
Ce procès marque jusqu'à présent le défi le plus audacieux lancé à la toute puissante armée turque.
Si la conspiration baptisée «coup de massue» avait réussi, cela aurait été la cinquième coup d’état militaire depuis 1960.
Les officiers auraient planifié de s'emparer du pays et de supprimer les lois islamistes mises en place par le Parti pour la Justice et le Développement (AKP), après avoir créé le chaos en commettant des attentats à la bombe contre au moins deux mosquées importantes, en provoquant un conflit avec leur voisin grec et en assassinant des dignitaires religieux.
Les forces armées prétendent que le complot n'était rien de plus qu'un séminaire pour discuter d'éventuels scénarios.
Des milliers de documents provenant des bases militaires ont été confisqués et seront utilisés par les procureurs dans le procès pour tenter de prouver que le plan était un véritable complot pour renverser le gouvernement.
