Germany-Turkey relations sour
On Friday 3 March, Germany decided to cancel three meetings of support for the April 16 referendum in Turkey. It concerns the constitutional reform voted on January 21, 2017 which would strengthen the power of president Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Germany has the biggest Turkish community with three million residents.
During a meeting in Istanbul on March 5, the Turkish president declared cancelling meetings was akin to Nazi practices. German chancellor Angela Merkel answered that in Germany the decision to cancel meetings didn’t depend on the Federal State but on the cities. Then she called the Turkish prime minister Binali Yildrim to seek to appease the tension between the two countries.
This tension began on February 28 with the arrest and incarceration of a German newspaper correspondent in Turkey. He is accused of terrorist propaganda and being a member of the PKK (Workers's Party of Kurdistan). Germany called these accusations absurd.

Le vendredi 3 mars, l'Allemagne a décidé d'annuler trois meetings de soutien au référendum du 16 avril en Turquie. C'est un référendum pour la réforme constitutionnelle qui a été votée le 21 janvier 2017 et qui renforce le pouvoir du président Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
L'Allemagne possède la plus grande communauté turque avec trois millions de personnes.
Lors d'une réunion à Istanbul le 5 mars, le président turc a déclaré qu’annuler ces réunions tenait des pratiques nazis.
La chancelière allemande Angela Merkel a répondu qu’en Allemagne la décision d'annuler les meetings ne dépendait pas de l'Etat fédéral mais des villes. Puis elle a appelé le Premier Ministre turc Binali Yildrim pour tenter d'apaiser la tension entre les deux pays.
Cette tension a commencé le 28 février avec l'arrestation et l'incarcération d'un correspondant de presse allemand en Turquie. Il est accusé de propagande terroriste et d'être membre du PKK (Parti des Travailleurs du Kurdistan). L'Allemagne a qualifié ces accusations d’aberrantes.
