Newspaper reveals Al-Qaeda plot

The 9th of December, the daily Taraf newspaper made public an Al-Qaeda plot which targeted to bomb Turkey’s Parliament and a number of churches. The newspaper revealed the content of an official indictment against 11 Al-Qaeda militants arrested in July.

In July, the police carried out an operation targeting an Al-Qaeda cell that had received orders from Al-Qaeda administrators in Afghanistan. During six months, police investigators had tracked a suspect who had led them to the den of the terrorists.

The police operation prevented an attack on the US Embassy. Police apprehended the suspected Al-Qaeda members with 700 kilograms of explosives and instructions for making bombs, plans of Parliament, a list of international churches, as well as names and home addresses of church staffers in Ankara. Up to now, Turkish Christian leaders didn’t know anything about this plot.

The indictment also showed that the Al-Qaeda cell planned to begin their bombings against Turkey before attacking the United States and other countries.

Al-Qaeda has already carried out terrorist attacks in Turkey. In 2003, they bombed the British Consulate, a British bank and two synagogues and killed 58 people. In 2008, they attacked the U.S Consulate.

Today, Turkish police is searching for three Al-Qaeda militants and five other people involved in a heist. They stole $3.5 million from a Turkish businessman’s bank account in order to serve Al-Qaeda’s cause. The authorities said that it was the first “fiscal terrorism” operation in Turkey.

Mis au jour d’un complot d’Al-Qaïda

Le 9 décembre dernier, le quotidien Taraf a rendu public un complot d’Al-Qaïda visant à détruire le Parlement turc et plusieurs églises. Le journal a révélé le contenu de l’inculpation officielle de 11 membres d’Al-Qaïda arrêtés cet été.

En juillet, la police a effectué une opération visant à démanteler une cellule d’Al-Qaïda qui recevait des commandes de talibans afghans. Durant six mois, les policiers ont traqué un suspect qui les a conduits tout droit au repaire des terroristes.

L’opération a permis d’empêcher une attaque sur l’ambassade des Etats-Unis. La police a arrêté les membres présumés d’Al-Qaïda en possession de 700 kilogrammes d’explosifs, d’instructions pour la confection d’une bombe, de plans du Parlement, d’une liste d’églises internationales, ainsi que les noms et adresses des ecclésiastiques d’Ankara qui jusqu'à présent n’étaient absolument pas au courant de ce complot qui les visait.

Le contenu de l’inculpation a également montré que la cellule d’Al-Qaïda comptait commencer ses actions terroristes en Turquie avant de les étendre aux Etats-Unis puis au reste du monde.

Auparavant, Al-Qaïda avait déjà perpétré des attaques terroristes en Turquie. En 2003, ils avaient commis des attentats à la bombe contre le Consulat et une banque britanniques ainsi que deux synagogues, tuant 58 personnes. En 2008, ils ont attaqué le Consulat américain.

Actuellement, la police turque recherche trois extrémistes d’Al-Qaïda et cinq autres personnes impliqués dans le détournement d’un compte bancaire appartenant à un riche homme d’affaires turc. Ils ont détourné 3,5 millions de dollars dans le but de servir la cause d’Al-Qaïda. Pour la Turquie, il s’agit de la première opération de « terrorisme fiscal » selon les autorités.
